About RouteCycle
Hello everyone, and thank you for visiting my project!
I’m a cycling enthusiast who loves long rides and exploring beautiful places—castles, waterfalls, hidden sights, and more. The idea for this project came to me while cycling: I often missed amazing spots just a few hundred meters from the road simply because I didn’t know they were there. Maps aren’t perfect, and it’s easy to overlook a lot of breathtaking views while riding. Some places might be slightly off the main route, but they’re so incredible that you’d definitely want to see them. Like many cyclists I personally hate cars. I love traffic-free routes that bring me a lot of joy. We've put a lot of effort to avoid traffic as much as possible.
RouteCycle is my personal passion project. I have one companion who develops the web. We’re simply two people who love cycling — not just for sport but for the adventure of discovering new places.
What RouteCycle Does
RouteCycle automatically generates routes to help you explore hidden gems and avoid traffic. Whether you’re looking for a scenic ride near home or a new route that takes you past beautiful sights, RouteCycle helps you find the best places along the way. All data is based on openstreetmap and wikidata.
Current Features
- Modes: There are two modes - Circle and Oneway. Oneway is what other projects (Komoot, Strava, Garmin) typically offer: routes from point A to point B. Circle mode generates a loop route that starts and ends at the same place.
- Stops: You can add up to five stops you want to visit - we will generate a routes through them! Usually it's a eating stops but between them we will choose the best roads without traffic!
- Routes with sights, springs or cafes: Discover beautiful sceneries along your ride, fill your bottles fast, or find the best cafes for a coffee stop.
- Explore new roads: Find quality roads you haven't ridden yet - discover new places while avoiding roads you've already explored.
- Rural or Urban When looking for sights you can choose what matters most to you. Rural tries to escape the city and traffic as much as possible. Urban on the other hand finds routes over the best sights (it ignores city and traffic completely) - this mode is good for tourists in a new city.
- Time-based generation: Short on time? Instead of a distance, set how long you want to ride (for example, 2 hours) and we'll build a Circle route that fits. We estimate your speed from your Strava history — or you can pick an athlete level manually — so the route lands close to your time.
- Strava integration: When you complete a new cycling activity on Strava, we automatically update its description with "new X kilometers" to track your exploration progress. You can turn this off in the settings if you prefer.
Future Plans
- Gravel & MTB support: Dedicated routing for gravel and mountain bikes — leave the tarmac behind and ride routes that favour gravel, forest tracks and trails, tuned to how much rough stuff you're after.
- Tourism: One of my passing - multi-day trips on the bike. In the future I want to make maximum distance very high - 5000-10000km and let it build very long route for you - so you wouldn't need to do it manually that takes a lot of time. It can find campings or cheap hotels on the way and many other interested stuff for a tourist.
I have many more ideas, but I’d love to hear yours! If you have feedback or features you’d love to see, let me know.
